WordPress - Beyond A Blog

The WordPress platform was designed to be a blogging platform. Since its inception, however, it has evolved well beyond being just a blog. This has happened for three reasons. First, the open source developers who write the core engine have evolved the platform considerably. Second, the plugin development community has expanded the functionality of the platform beyond imagination. Last, theme developers have drastically improved the look and feel of the user interface.

The bottom line is that WordPress has evolved well beyond being "just a blogging platform". Today WordPress is being used for social media sites built upon BuddyPress, online eCommerce, and even multimedia repositories. There is even an article directory wordpress theme that provides all of the functionality of a working eZine in one simple set of plugins and a theme.

With the drastic increase WordPress adoption, the platform has drawn criticism as well. The most widely given complaint is that, from a web design perspective, sites built on WordPress look "wordpressy" or too much like a blog. The second major complaint is that the platform, built primarily on PHP, has been a target for hackers. Last, major hosting providers do not provide a first class WordPress experience which site owners perceive to be a problem with the platform itself.

The major question is now whether the platform will stay true to its origins and continue to support the communities that made it what it is today. These communities are primarily the theme developers and plugin developers that have been with the platform since its inception. The other major question is that with such a major adoption rate, when will Microsoft or another software giant step in and proclaim support? Is it possible that they'd make a SQL Server shim or support ASP integration into themes? Since the platform is built on PHP, I'm going to assume the answer is NEVER. Even if it is technically possible, perhaps that is a good thing.

For now, enjoy WordPress as it is truly fun to work with and serves as the engine for some of the best blogs and websites in the world.
